new work - 1/30 seconds on a train

some new scans i've been working on.

all of this started last year during the Summer Institute when we read an excerpt from Wolfgang Schivelbusch's The Railway Journey, in which he discusses how the advent of railroad travel radically affected perceptual processes. i remember being really excited by this at the time because it seemed to directly address the relationship between exterior environments and an individual's way of sense-making. since then i have been doing a lot of reading on different modes of travel, and trying to figure out why/how sensory aggregation caused by travelling at 70 mph relates to the sensory overload caused by walking through a shopping mall.

spring is here and it makes me want to hop on the nearest moving vehicle and into the sunshine.
